In 1970, when I was 15, I borrowed Bill Evans’ solo piano album Alone from the Transcona Public Library. I still listen to that sublime album from time to time. It’s such powerful and subtle music. Later in the 70’s I heard Chick Corea and Keith Jarrett, and rediscovered some of the early masters, like Oscar Peterson and Ray Brown. Then later in the 70’s, Wayne Shorter and Josef Zawinul transformed the Miles Davis sound into the colourful half composed, half improvised music of their band Weather Report. As budding composer and improvisational pianist, this music was irresistible. I needed to figure it out and be a part of it.
